This painting is an extension of the Phoenix pencil from 1987. Kiriath Arba means “City of Arba” from the time of Genesis which is also the burial place of the Biblical Patriarchs, Abraham, Sarah and so on. Arba was the father the the Anakim who were the giants in the land.

This is not the literal place now called Hebron, it is my Hebron. A place redeemed from giants, graveyard of my fathers and therefore the place of resurrection for all that was lost. As the woman walks under the sea, she is not of the sea. She is a citizen of another country. Call it a portal to Eden .

Kiriath Arba began as a pencil directly on canvass, as all of James’ paintings do. In the first image we see that an original choice for the woman focal point was painted over. In the second pencil another model was touted until he finally settled on the present choice.

This gives an idea of how the painting is developed from a B/W foundation to a color image.
