The painting ABYSS came about as the result of an accident one afternoon. James had covered a board with a solid ground coat of burnt sienna, then changed his mind and started to wipe the paint back off with an old sheet.
But the resulting designs made by the sheet became more interesting than the first idea. If you look closely, as often in wood grains, distorted images can be seen of animals or other things. What James saw reminded him of what Hell must look like if the lid were peeled off and we were allowed to peer in. The serendipitous effect was enhanced to become ABYSS, a chaotic and unintended process employed to depict the chaotic underworld most of us want to relegate to the realm of fantasy.
